Het specifieke proces is als volgt:<br \/>\nOliezuigproces:<br \/>\nWanneer de plunjer naar rechts beweegt (of wanneer deze wordt uitgetrokken), neemt het volume van de afdichtingswerkkamer in het cilinderblok toe en neemt de druk af. Op dit punt gaat de inlaatklep open en zuigt de hydraulische olie uit het lagedrukgebied de werkkamer in.<br \/>\nOliepersingsproces:<br \/>\nWanneer de plunjer naar links beweegt (of naar binnen duwt), neemt het volume van de afdichtingswerkkamer af en neemt de druk toe. Wanneer de druk hoger is dan de uitlaatdruk, gaat de uitlaatklep open om de hydraulische olie uit het hogedrukgebied af te voeren.<br \/>\nHeen en weer gaande beweging:<br \/>\nDe plunjer voert een heen-en-weergaande beweging uit onder invloed van de veer of de transmissie-as en herhaalt voortdurend het bovenstaande proces van het aanzuigen en persen van olie, om zo een continue toevoer van hydraulische olie te realiseren.<br \/>\nVariabele aanpassing:<br \/>\nSommige zuigerpompen zijn ook uitgerust met een variabel mechanisme dat de verplaatsing van de pomp regelt door de helling van de swashplate te veranderen.
